Willie McCovey became the 15th player in major league history to reach the 400 total in homers when the Giants' slugger smashed two round-trippers in a 12-0 walloping of the Pirates. The blows were the 400th and 401st of the veteran first baseman's career.

Garry Maddox and Ed Goodson also hit homers. Another veteran, Juan Marichal, pitched himself into the spotlight, making his first start since July 3 and pitching his first shutout since April 25. [The Sporting News]
