Jim Brewer pitched out of a jam, retiring Bernie Carbo on a grounder with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning, to enable the Dodgers to defeat the Cardinals, 3-2. Al Downing, who was the winner on a three-hitter, beat the Cardinals for the seventh straight time. The veteran lefthander helped himself to victory with a double in the third. When Willie Davis also doubled, Downing scored to break a 1-1 tie. Joe Ferguson followed with a single to send Davis home with what proved to be the deciding run. [The Sporting News]
