Breaking a close game apart, the Cardinals erupted for six runs in the seventh inning and defeated the Dodgers, 8-1. Joe Torre homered with a man on base in the first before the Dodgers picked up their only run off Bob Gibson in the sixth on singles by Don Sutton and Davey Lopes and a sacrifice fly by Bill Buckner.

The Cards started the seventh by loading the bases on a single by Torre, a hit batsman and a walk. Jose Cruz drove in two runs with a double to kayo Sutton. Mike Tyson singled off George Culver to drive in two more tallies. After a forceout by Gibson and pass to Lou Brock, the Cardinals' last two runs counted on a double by Tim McCarver and a wild pitch.
