Al Kaline batted in three runs with a homer and single to reach a career total of 1,500 RBIs and provide the Tigers with a 4-2 victory over the Red Sox. Kaline hit his homer in the first inning. Tommy Harper had a matching drive for the Red Sox in the third.

The tie then lasted until the eighth when the Tigers loaded the bases and Kaline drove in two runs with a single. Hits by Willie Horton and Frank Howard added another tally before the inning ended.
