Putting on the speed, Freddie Patek scored from second base on an infield hit by Carl Taylor in the 10th inning to bring the Royals a 2-1 victory over the White Sox. Steve Busby, who pitched for the Royals, gave up only four hits, but the White Sox scored in the sixth on a triple by Jorge Orta and single by Jerry Hairston. John Mayberry doubled for the Royals in the ninth and Taylor, taking over as a pinch-runner, scored the tying run on a double by Hal McRae.

With one out in the 10th, Patek walked and stole second, After Cookie Rojas flied out, Amos Otis was passed intentionally. Taylor, who had remained in the game after his pinch-running chore, smashed a grounder up the middle. Eddie Leon made a diving stop of the ball, but his throw home was too late to catch Patek.
