The Pirates piled up 21 hits, their season's high, and defeated the Cubs, 10-6. Rennie Stennett had two doubles and two singles to lead the attack. Richie Zisk rapped a homer and two singles, while Willie Stargell contributed two doubles and a single.

The Cubs also were in a hitting mood, getting 13 safeties including a homer by Adrian Garrett. Dave Giusti, the Pirates' third pitcher, ran into trouble in the ninth inning when the Cubs loaded the bases on three hits with one out, but the reliever saved the game by retiring Ron Santo on a pop fly and striking out Carmen Fanzone.
