The Red Sox beat the Yankees for the ninth time in 12 meetings when Rick Miller's two-out single in the ninth scored Rico Petrocelli from third, giving Boston a 4-3 victory. The Yanks entered the ninth down by two runs, but a pinch-homer by Jim Ray Hart tied the score.

Petrocelli, who hit a two-run homer in the second, opened the Red Sox ninth with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch by loser Sparky Lyle, then to third on a groundout. Miller then singled up the middle to end the contest, making a winner of Luis Tiant, who went the distance and worked out of constant trouble.
