J.R. Richard pitched the first shutout of his major league career and Jim Wynn, hitless in 32 trips, broke out of his slump with a two-run double as the Astros defeated the Dodgers, 5-0. Wynn entered the game in the fourth inning as a replacement for injured Cesar Cedeno.

Tommie Agee walked in the sixth, Roger Metzger singled and Wynn followed with his double to end Richard's scoreless duel with Al Downing. The Astros went on to add two more runs before the stanza ended on a single by Bob Watson, forceout by Doug Rader, wild throw by Davey Lopes and single by Lee May.
