A seven-run outburst in the fourth inning propelled the Red Sox to an 8-5 victory in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, but the Orioles came back with a 17-hit attack to win the nightcap, 8-2. The Orioles scored four runs in the second inning of the first game, three coming on a homer by Earl Williams, before the Red Sox exploded. Dwight Evans knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single. Another pair followed on singles by Tommy Harper and Luis Aparicio. After two out, Carl Yastrzemski and Orlando Cepeda walked to force in Harper. Rico Petrocelli then climaxed the stanza with a two-run single.
