Aided by two homers, John Morlan gained his first major league victory when the Pirates defeated the Phillies, 3-1. Willie Stargell homered after a triple by Al Oliver in the first inning and Manny Sanguillen added the other run with a circuit clout in the sixth. The Phillies picked up their run in the home half of the sixth on a single by Willie Montanez and double by Greg Luzinski. [The Sporting News]
