Willie Mays hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to clinch the Mets' 7-3 victory over the Cardinals, who played with Mike Tyson out of the lineup and with a number of other players under the weather because of a flu outbreak. John Milner knocked in two runs for the Mets with a triple in the first inning, but he was hit in the head by a throw from the outfield and had to leave the game.

Rusty Staub ran for Milner and scored on a single by Jerry Grote. The Cardinals came back with the aid of a homer by Bernie Carbo to tie the score, but the Mets went ahead again in the fifth when Ted Martinez singled, Jon Matlack sacrificed and Don Hahn singled. [The Sporting News]
