Doyle Alexander, who was on the disabled list for 26 days with tendinitis in his right elbow, returned to action and was knocked out in the first inning as the Orioles lost to the Red Sox, 5-3. The Red Sox rapped Alexander for four runs on a single by Luis Aparicio, double by Reggie Smith, single by Orlando Cepeda, double by Rico Petrocelli and single by Carlton Fisk. Eddie Watt relieved and pitched the rest of the way, giving up only one run on a homer by Tommy Harper in the ninth. Merv Rettenmund hit for the circuit with a man on base for the Orioles.
