The Royals, after rallying to overcome a 6-1 deficit, capped their comeback with a run in the 11th inning to defeat the Red Sox, 7-6. The Red Sox built up their early lead with the aid of a two-run triple by Doug Griffin before the Royals got back in the game with three runs in the fourth. Freddie Patek then homered in the sixth and the tying tally followed on a single by Cookie Rojas and triple by Rick Reichardt. In the 11th, Reichardt singled, stopped at second on another single by Hal McRae and scored the winning run when Lou Piniella doubled.
