After the Athletics scored five runs in the last two innings to win the first game, 8-4, Jim Perry and John Hiller stifled Oakland's bats and pitched the Tigers to a 2-0 victory in the second game of a twi-night doubleheader. In the lidlifter, the A's broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the eighth. Sal Bando tripled and scored the go-ahead run on a double by Reggie Jackson. Bando added a double in the ninth when the A's counted their final pair. Al Kaline and Bill Freehan hit homers for the Tigers.

In the second game, the Tigers scored on singles by Frank Howard, Freehan and Aurelio Rodriguez in the fourth inning and picked up an unearned run in the sixth. Perry held the A's to five hits before being removed with two men on base and one out in the eighth. Hiller pitched hitless relief the rest of the way to register his 25th save. [The Sporting News]
