The Mets received effective relief pitching from Buzz Capra and Tug McGraw and defeated the Cardinals, 6-5, to gain a split in their six-game series, which included two make-up contests due to previous postponements. The Cards put together five straight singles off Ray Sadecki to take a 4-3 lead in the third inning, but the Mets came back with a pair in their half on a single by Rusty Staub, double by John Milner and single by Cleon Jones.

Ted Martinez singled in the fourth and, after a sacrifice and an error, counted what proved to be the deciding run on a single by Staub. Capra, who was the winner in relief, yielded a tally in the sixth, but McGraw shut out the Cardinals in the last three innings to save the game. [The Sporting News]
