A three-run rally in the sixth inning enabled the Pirates to defeat the Astros, 4-3. The Pirates scored once on singles by Gene Clines, Dave Cash and Al Oliver in the fourth before the Astros put together four singles with an error by Manny Sanguillen for three unearned runs off Jim Rooker in the fifth.

Gene Alley batted for Rooker in the sixth and walked. Cash singled and Oliver hit a sacrifice fly to score Alley. Willie Stargell doubled, driving in Cash with the tying run, and Richie Zisk singled to plate Stargell with the deciding tally.
