Fred Beene, who pitched what amounted to a complete game in relief, gained his sixth straight victory when the Yankees rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Rangers, 3-2. Fritz Peterson, who started for the Yankees, delivered only one pitch on which Dave Nelson bunted safely. Peterson hurt his right thigh running to cover first base and had to leave the game. Beene relieved and allowed only four hits the rest of the way, but one of them was a homer by Bill Sudakis in the fifth. The Yankees, who were trailing, 2-1, opened the ninth with the tying run on a double by Bobby Murcer and single by Thurman Munson. After advancing to second on an infield out by Felipe Alou, Munson scored the winning run on a single by Gene Michael. [The Sporting News] |
