Davey Johnson, whose previous high in homers was 18 with the Orioles in 1971, smashed his 30th of the season, connecting with two men on base in the eighth inning when the Braves erupted for five runs to defeat the Cardinals, 8-6. Chuck Goggin led off the inning with a pinch-single and scored on a triple by Ralph Garr to break a 2-2 tie.

Garr counted on a wild pitch by Diego Segui, who took over in relief of Al Hrabosky. Then, after two out, Hank Aaron and Dusty Baker singled and Johnson hit his homer. Paul Casanova added a homer in the ninth before the Cardinals rallied for four runs in their half, two scoring on a homer by Jose Cruz and two on a single by Ted Sizemore. [The Sporting News]
