A wild pitch decided a duel between Mike Cuellar and Bert Blyleven as the Orioles defeated the Twins, 2-1, to move into first place in the East Division ahead of the Yankees and Tigers. Tommy Davis homered for the Orioles in the first inning. Merv Rettenmund tripled in the third and scored what proved to be the deciding run on a wild pitch by Blyleven. Cuellar allowed only one man to reach third base until the ninth when George Mitterwald singled home the Twins' run.
