Relieving with two out in the first inning, Fred Scherman pitched the rest of the way and was the winner when the Tigers used consecutive homers by Gates Brown and Al Kaline to defeat the White Sox, 7-3. The White Sox scored two runs off Mike Strahler before Scherman took over. The Tigers came back with a run in their half of the first and then decided the outcome in the third when Brown hit his homer with two men on base and Kaline followed with a circuit clout.
