Substituting pinch-hitter for pinch-hitter, the Reds scored four runs in the seventh inning and defeated the Cardinals, 8-4. Holding a 4-3 lead, the Reds opened the seventh by loading the bases on a single by Johnny Bench, an error, a sacrifice and intentional pass to Darrel Chaney.

When Larry Stahl was announced as a pinch-hitter for Ross Grimsley, the Cardinals brought lefthander Al Hrabosky to the mound to replace Rick Wise. Phil Gagliano then batted for Stahl and singled. Two runs scored and a third followed across the plate on a misplay of the ball by Lou Brock in left field. Gagliano reached second on the error and then crossed the plate on a single by Pete Rose.
