The Reds erupted for five runs in the second inning and gained a 7-2 victory over the Cardinals, who absorbed their seventh straight defeat. A double by Bobby Tolan and two walks loaded the bases before Pete Rose drove in the Reds' first two runs with a double. After a pass to Joe Morgan reloaded the sacks, Dan Driessen singled to plate two more tallies. Morgan was thrown out trying to score on a grounder by Tony Perez, but Johnny Bench then capped the Reds' outburst with a single that produced the fifth run. [The Sporting News]
