The Cubs went down to their eighth straight defeat, losing to the Astros, 3-2. The Cubs ended Don Wilson's string of 22 scoreless innings with a run in the third on a double by Jose Cardenal and single by Billy Williams. A safe bunt by Rick Monday, an error and single by Ron Santo added a run in the fifth. The Astros came back with the tying pair in the seventh. Lee May and Johnny Edwards singled, moved up an extra base on a throwing error by Dave Rosello and scored on a single by Tommy Helms. Jim Wynn walked in the eighth and took third on a one-out single by Cesar Cedeno, who raced to second on the throw. After an intentional pass to Bob Watson, Doug Rader rapped a grounder into the hole. Don Kessinger was able to grab the ball for a forceout at third, but Wynn scored what proved to be the Astros' winning run. [The Sporting News] |
