Nelson Briles, who started for the Pirates, gave up a run in the first on singles by Joe Morgan and Tony Perez around a stolen base. Willie Stargell tied the score with a homer off Fred Norman in the second. The Pirates then moved ahead, 3-1, with two runs in the fourth on a single by Stargell, pass to Richie Zisk and singles by Manny Sanguillen and Rennie Stennett.

Dan Driessen doubled and scored on a single by Perez to open the Reds' ninth. After Johnny Bench grounded out, Hernandez replaced Briles and struck out Bobby Tolan. Giusti, coming on, walked Phil Gagliano, but struck out Larry Stahl to end the game. [The Sporting News]
