Scoring two runs in the ninth inning, the Reds defeated the Pirates, 5-4, for their sixth victory in the last seven games. The Reds scored two runs in the first and added a homer by Tony Perez for a 3-1 lead in the sixth before the Pirates rallied to tie the score in the seventh on a single by Manny Sanguillen, walk to Rennie Stennett, a sacrifice, passed ball and single by Richie Hebner.

In the ninth, Johnny Bench doubled and gave way to Cesar Geronimo, who scored on a single by Andy Kosco. After a sacrifice by Bill Plummer, Pete Rose singled to drive in Kosco with what proved to be the deciding run.
