Capitalizing on an error, the Angels scored two unearned runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Yankees, 3-1. Bob Oliver was safe on a wide throw by Graig Nettles and took second when Mike Epstein grounded out. Richie Scheinblum drew an intentional pass and was forced by Tommy McCraw.

Winston Llenas batted for Jeff Torborg and singled, driving in pinch-runner Billy Parker to break a 1-1 tie. Sandy Alomar followed with another single for an insurance run. As a result, the Angels were able to beat Mel Stottlemyre for the first time since June 30, 1967, after 11 straight losses to the Yankees' righthander. [The Sporting News]
