The Twins took a 5-0 lead in the first inning, three runs scoring on a round-tripper by Bobby Darwin and another on a solo swat by Steve Brye.

The Tigers came back with a five-run explosion in the fifth on a homer by Norm Cash and a grand slam by Al Kaline. The Twins broke the tie and were ahead, 7-6, going into the eighth when Ed Brinkman homered for the Tigers to forge a new deadlock, but a single by Darwin and Hisle's homer gave the decision to the Twins.
