Jerry Grote hit the first grand-slam homer of his major league career and Tom Seaver allowed only two infield singles as the Mets defeated the Padres, 7-0. Wayne Garrett started the Mets' scoring with a homer on Steve Arlin's first pitch of the game. In the fourth, John Milner walked, Cleon Jones singled and Ken Boswell was safe on an error to load the bases. After Don Hahn walked to force in Milner, Grote hit his grand slam.
