After six tries, Bill Lee succeeded in gaining his 13th victory when the Red Sox defeated the Royals, 4-3, with the aid of two unearned runs. The Red Sox earned their initial pair in the third inning. Dwight Evans walked, moved up on an infield out and scored on a single by Luis Aparicio, who took second on the throw and crossed the plate on a double by Danny Cater. However, an error by Lou Piniella in the sixth and another by Kurt Bevacqua in the seventh tainted the Red Sox' last two tallies.
