Breaking up a marathon game, the Reds erupted for five runs in the 16th inning and defeated the Mets, 8-3. With one out, Denis Menke singled and took third on a single by Tony Perez. The Mets then gambled, allowing lefthander Tug McGraw to pitch to Johnny Bench, who bats righhanded. Bench promptly singled, scoring Menke to break the tie. McGraw then walked Larry Stahl to load the bases. Harry Parker relieved and before the side was retired the Reds added four runs on a single by Cesar Geronimo and triple by Ed Crosby.
