Reggie Smith batted in five runs and Dwight Evans and Luis Aparicio knocked in three apiece to pace the Red Sox to a 15-9 victory over the Rangers. Evans and Smith each homered with a man on base in the second inning. Evans hit a double and Smith rapped a single, picking up an RBI apiece, when the Red Sox made it 9-0 in the third. The Rangers came back with six runs in the next three innings. Toby Harrah hit a homer and Tom Grieve drove in five runs with a double and homer.

The Red Sox broke the game apart with six runs in the ninth. Walks and singles by Rick Miller and Doug Griffin produced one tally. After Evans walked to fill the bases, Aparicio cleared the sacks with a double and Smith followed with his second homer of the game.
