Fergie Jenkins, who had lost three straight decisions, gained his first victory since July 31 when the Cubs defeated the Reds, 6-4. The Cubs were ahead, 4-2, going into the seventh inning, but Jenkins lost his lead when Pete Rose singled and Joe Morgan homered. However, in the Cubs' half, Rick Monday and Billy Williams walked and Rico Carty singled to break the tie. Jenkins then provided himself with an insurance run with a single in the eighth after Jose Cardenal walked and Paul Popovich sacrificed. [The Sporting News]
