Although limited to six hits, the Cubs scored five unearned runs, three coming on Paul Popovich's first homer of the season, to defeat the Reds, 6-5. The Cubs loaded the bases in the fourth inning on a walk to Don Kessinger and singles by Rick Monday and Billy Williams. Kessinger scored on a grounder by Rico Carty and when Darrel Chaney bobbled the ball, Monday also crossed the plate.

Ron Santo hit into a double play, erasing Williams. The Reds then passed Jose Cardenal purposely to get at Popovich, who surprised with his homer.
