A run-scoring single by Freddie Patek with two out in the 10th inning enabled the Royals to defeat the Yankees, 8-7, to complete a sweep of the three-game series. Jim Ray Hart and Mike Hegan hit homers for the the Yankees, Hegan's blow with a man on base tying the score at 7-7 in the eighth. Lou Piniella was safe on an error by Hegan in the 10th and Rick Reichardt sacrificed. Sparky Lyle passed Kurt Bevacqua intentionally and struck out Fran Healy, but the Yankees' reliever could not get past Patek.
