Coming back after the Reds went ahead in the 10th inning, the Cubs rallied for two runs to gain a 4-3 victory. Andy Kosco homered for the Reds and Ron Santo for the Cubs in the early going before the clubs went into overtime. The Reds took the lead in the 10th when Larry Stahl doubled and Billy Williams, playing first base, threw past pitcher Bob Locker covering the bag on a grounder by Pete Rose.

The Cubs also benefited from an error in their rally. Santo grounded to Clay Carroll and reached second on the pitcher's wild throw. Matt Alexander ran for Santo and scored the tying run on a sacrifice by Jose Cardenal and single by Paul Popovich. Randy Hundley singled, Popovich stopping at second. Jim Hickman followed with a single, but Popovich was out trying to score. However, Don Kessinger came through with another single and Hundley crossed the plate with the winning run.
