Jerry Reuss, who won 14 games with the Cardinals in 1971, equaled that total for the Astros by defeating the Cubs, 4-2. The Cubs loaded the bases against the lefthander in the third inning and scored on infield outs by Rico Carty and Ron Santo. However. when Cubs loaded the bases again in the ninth, this time with two out, Reuss retired Andre Thornton to gain his victory. Doug Rader batted in two runs for the Astros with a single in the first inning. A sacrifice fly by Bob Gallagher added a tally in the second. Rader doubled and Skip Jutze singled for an extra run in the eighth. [The Sporting News] |
