. . . where the 1970s live forever!

The Mets beat the Cubs, 6-4, in a late morning contest that was supposed to have been the first game of a doubleheader, but after the Mets clinched the N. L. Eastern Division championship with their victory, the second game was called due to wet grounds.

The Mets got a home run from Cleon Jones off loser Burt Hooton in the second inning, then two more in the fourth on Jerry Grote's two-run single and made it 5-0 in the fifth. Tom Seaver was sent to the showers in the seventh when a two-run homer by Rick Monday reduced the New York margin to 6-4. Tug McGraw got the last nine outs. [ap]
