Opening a two-year stay at Shea Stadium while their own park was being rehabilitated, the Yankees defeated the Indians, 6-1, before a crowd of 20,744. The new anti-spitball rule was invoked for the first time when umpire Marty Springstead called a ball on Indians' starter Gaylord Perry for throwing what appeared to be an illegal pitch.
