Steve Ontiveros, Giants' rookie first baseman, smashed a 2-2 tie with a homer in the fourth inning to beat the Astros, 3-2. The Astros scored their runs in the first on doubles by Roger Metzger and Cesar Cedeno around a single by Milt May. The Giants matched that with a pair in their half of the first. Chris Speier was hit by a pitch, took third on a single by Garry Maddox and scored on an infield out by Gary Matthews. Maddox then stole third and crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Tom Griffin.
