. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Providing a dramatic finish for the opening-day crowd of 40,222, Mike Schmidt hit a homer with a man on base in the ninth inning to give the Phillies a 5-4 victory over the Mets. Tom Seaver, who started for the Mets, had a 3-1 lead in his duel with Steve Carlton until the Phillies tied the score in the sixth inning with the help of singles by Larry Bowa and Del Unser and a double by Greg Luzinski. Tug McGraw was on the Mets' mound in relief of Seaver when Schmidt hit his homer to score behind Billy Grabarkewitz, pinch-running for Tony Taylor, who had walked. [The Sporting News]
