Ross Grimsley, who was acquired from the Reds, made his A. L. debut by pitching the Orioles to a 5-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Tigers came back to score four runs in the 10th inning and win the second game, 8-4. In the opener, the Orioles scored all their runs in the first inning, with the aid of doubles by Bobby Grich and Andy Etchebarren. After Grimsley lost his bid for a shutout on an error in the ninth, Bob Reynolds relieved and fanned Mickey Stanley for the final out.

The Tigers broke the nightcap apart at the expense of Grant Jackson, scoring their four runs in the 10th on a walk and singles by Willie Horton, Norm Cash, Bill Freehan and Ed Brinkman. [The Sporting News]
