Ron Fairly hit the fifth grand slam of his major league career, climaxing an eight-run uprising in the fourth inning, as the Expos gained a 13-3 victory in the nightcap of a doubleheader with the Cubs, who won the opener, 7-4. An error, singles by Jim Cox and Terry Humphrey, a pass to Mike Torrez with the bases loaded and singles by Ron Hunt and Tim Foli produced the first four runs in the Expos' big inning. After an infield out, Ken Singleton was passed purposely to get at Fairly, who hit Mike Paul's next pitch for the Expos' first homer of the season.

In the first game, Ken Frailing was the Cubs' winner, receiving credit for his first major league victory. The rookie southpaw shut out the Expos until the ninth inning when Ray Burris had to come in to stop a four-run rally. Billy Williams drove in two of the Cubs' runs with a homer and double.
