Homers by Dwight Evans, John Kennedy and Carl Yastrzemski in the first three innings paced the Red Sox to a 7-5 victory over the Tigers. Yastrzemski batted in two runs with a double in the first and Evans followed with his homer. Kennedy connected for the circuit in the second and Yastrzemski in the third.

Juan Marichal, making his first A. L. start for the Red Sox, was kayoed in the fourth after the Tigers pulled within one run. Ed Brinkman accounted for three RBIs with a single and homer. Dick Drago was the winner in relief, but the Red Sox had to call on both Roger Moret and Diego Segui in the ninth. Segui saved the game by striking out Norm Cash with the bases loaded.
