Although collecting 15 hits, the Mets scored only on a homer by Rusty Staub and lost the first game of a doubleheader, 2-1, in 11 innings before succumbing again in the second game when the Phillies rallied for five runs in the last two innings to gain a 5-3 victory. The Phillies' first run in the lidlifter came on singles by Greg Luzinski, Willie Montanez and Bob Boone in the fourth. After Staub's homer in the eighth, the game proceeded until the 11th when Larry Bowa doubled, Mike Anderson beat out an infield hit and Bill Robinson laid down a safe squeeze bunt.

In the nightcap, the Mets had a 3-0 lead with the aid of two unearned runs before the Phillies began their comeback with a pair in the eighth on singles by Tony Taylor and Dave Cash, double by Bowa and sacrifice fly by Del Unser. In the ninth, Boone, Cash and Bowa hit singles to tie the score and, with two out, Anderson doubled to drive in two runs for the Phils' winning margin. [The Sporting News]
