After six straight defeats, the Pirates gained their first victory of the season, winning the opener of a doubleheader, 8-4, but the Cardinals came back to take the nightcap, 6-5. In the lidlifter, the Pirates put together five singles for three runs in the third inning and then added their remaining tallies in the fourth, two scoring on a double by Rennie Stennett and two on a homer by Willie Stargell. Bake McBride hit his first major league homer for the Cardinals.

In the nightcap, Stennett homered in the second inning to tie the score at 3-3, but then the second baseman was guilty of a wild throw that enabled the Cardinals to go ahead again with two unearned runs in the third. The Redbirds tacked on what proved to be their winning run in the fourth on a single by Lou Brock, his theft of second and a single by Ted Sizemore. [The Sporting News]
