With two out in the 13th inning, Gene Tenace singled to score John Donaldson from second base and give the Athletics a 4-3 victory over the White Sox. Donaldson singled to open the stanza, but Reggie Jackson flied out before an infield tap by Joe Rudi moved Donaldson to second in position to score on Tenace's hit.

The White Sox tagged Ken Holtzman for two runs in the first inning and added another on a homer by Dick Allen in the third before the A's came back to tie the score with a two-run rap by Ray Fosse in the fifth and a run on singles by Jesus Alou and Sal Bando and sacrifice fly by Jackson in the eighth.
