A mental error by Ted Sizemore enabled the Phillies to score the winning run in a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals. With the score tied 1-1, Dave Cash walked in the eighth inning and stopped at second on a single by Larry Bowa. Unser then singled off Sizemore's glove, scoring Cash and sending Bowa to third.

Sizemore retrieved the ball about 15 feet in the outfield and, in apparent disgust over his inability to prevent the hit, started walking toward second with his head down. Bowa, noting Sizemore's inattention, broke for home and scored. Reggie Smith hit his first two N. L. homers for the Cardinals. [The Sporting News]
