Brian Downing, catching in place of Ed Herrmann, hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift the White Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Athletics. Reggie Jackson committed two errors, one of them resulting in a White Sox run, but hit a double and single to bat the A's to a 3-2 lead going into the eighth.

Bill Melton opened the White Sox rally with a double and Ron Santo singled, pinch-runner Luis Alvarado stopping at second. Ken Henderson followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the the score before Downing came to the plate and belted his winning homer off Darold Knowles, pitching in relief of Vida Blue.
