Carl Yastrzemski hit a single and two homers, driving in three runs, to provide the Red Sox with a 4-1 victory over the Royals. The Red Sox started off with a pair off Nelson Briles on a single by Tommy Harper, double by Doug Griffin and Yastrzemski's single.

Briles left the game in the fifth with knee trouble and Yastrzemski then hit his homers off Gene Garber in the sixth and eighth. Rick Wise was the winner but failed to finish, being removed after six innings when his arm tightened. Diego Segui finished and picked up his second save. [The Sporting News]
