A two-run homer by Tony Perez in the first inning started the Reds off to a 5-3 victory over the Cubs. The Reds added a run in the sixth on a single by Johnny Bench, a walk, error and sacrifice fly by Terry Crowley before Dave Concepcion drove in the deciding pair with a bases-loaded single in the eighth.

The Cubs, who scored on two walks and a pair of infield outs in the fourth, collected only one hit off Roger Nelson before the Reds' starter went out for a pinch-hitter in the sixth. Pedro Borbon, in relief, then gave up two hits and two runs in the ninth on a single by Jose Cardenal, pass to Billy Williams, an infield out and single by George Mitterwald. [The Sporting News]
